Chuck Stollenwerk brings an extensive background in both coaching and rowing to the MSOE rowing team, and now to WCREW.

Taking over a young MSOE rowing program in 2009, he has continued the early success of the novice crews and extended it to the varsity boats. The Raiders have sent boats to the IRA Regatta, the collegiate national championships, in eight of the last ten seasons. In 2014, MSOE took two entries to the regatta, entering both its Lightweight 4 and Heavyweight 4 into the competition.

The Lightweight 4 became the flagship entry for MSOE under Stollenwerk, while the Varsity 4 became a regular at the national championships. The Lightweight 4 made three-straight IRA Regatta appearances from 2012-14, competing in its first Grand Final in 2013 against several Ivy League schools and Wisconsin. Then, the next year, the boat was runner-up in the Petite Final. The Varsity 4 has made four national regatta appearances in five years.

Stollenwerk is a Milwaukee native and returned to his hometown after spending ten years in Austin, Texas, coaching at both the club and collegiate level. He served as head men’s novice coach for the University of Texas Crew from 2003-05 and then again during the 2008 season. While at Texas, he also coached the junior boys at the Austin Rowing Club in 2003 and 2004. During those seasons, the boys were ranked fourth and fifth nationally in the Junior Quad competition.

From 1996-98, Stollenwerk coached in Milwaukee, working with the varsity men’s and women’s crew teams at Marquette University. Under his watch, MU’s rowers showed marked improvement and their achievements still hold today as many of the fastest crews in Marquette’s history.

Stollenwerk rowed at the University of Wisconsin from 1988-93, then joined the coaching staff as one of the men’s novice coaches until 1996. In 1994, the Badgers took third at the IRA Regatta and followed that up with a second-place finish in 1995. While coaching at Wisconsin, he also coached junior boys and girls at the Mendota Rowing Club in Madison. The Mendota also competed at the high school national championships in 1994, taking third in the Junior Boys 4+.
